The Object of Rotary
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the
ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise and,
in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity
for service.
SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions,
the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations,
and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an
opportunity to serve society.
THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's
personal, business, and community life.
FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace, through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.
Rotary Principles:
Of the things we think, say, or do:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build good will and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

What is Rotary?
This definition of Rotary was created at the request of the
Rotary International
Board of Directors, who wanted a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of
Rotary. The definition finally arrived at is:
Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide
who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations,
and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Our Rotary Club Christmas Party
was generously hosted by Pam and Dave Osborn in their beautiful Point Reyes home.
Sliced ham, a generous helping of deviled eggs, a surfeit of delicious vegan dishes, fresh home-made
bread, California wines, and sinful desserts and hot coffee and tea made for a great climax to 2011.
Caught at the end of the evening, left to right, Jorgen Grugaard, Kathy Hartzell, Paul Elmore, John Tornes,
Pam Osborne, and extreme right, Charles Schultz.
On January 4th our speaker was Lou Bartolini,
who reviewed the fascinating history of the conception, politics, and final realization of
The Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. Steve Keplinger takes notes.
Inducting a new member:
Jorgen Grugaard was welcomed by President John Tornes (left) and past President Dick Aston. Jorgen retired
recently after a long career as Commercial Attaché for the Danish government and as a representative
for the United Nations in Vietnam.
